8 best hydrating lip products to save you from chapped dry lips while travelling

If you’re travelling somewhere cold, dry, or even just getting on a plane, here are the lip balms, lip oils and lip masks you will need

best lip products for chapped lips cold weather

Plane rides, cold weather and dry climates are all terrible for our lips, sucking the moisture and the life out of them. Whether you’ve got dry lips or are just going somewhere cold or dry, we highly recommend you take some of these lip products with you. The balms and oils will protect your lips from chapping, wind chill plus dehydration, and are non-sticky to boot! Try the lip masks at night to keep your lips looking and feeling extra soft in the morning.

Glossier Balm Dotcom, US$38 for a set of 3 from www.netaporter.com

I had a makeup artist use this on me once during a shoot in order to prep and hydrate my lips. It feels luxurious and intensely hydrating, and did a lot of work in a short amount of time. Plus, it’s not too expensive and has such pretty packaging. I have just one drawback, but that’s a personal opinion and unrelated to its effectiveness.

Clarins Instant Light Comfort Lip Oil, $36

These gorgeous lip oils have finally arrived on our sunny shores. The three shades (and flavours) are Honey, Red Berry, and Raspberry. They’re more of lip treatments with the barest hint of colour (Red Berry has the strongest tint), and hydrating ingredients like hazelnut extract and organic jojoba oil. They really seal in the moisture on your lips, last a pretty long time, smell like fruity jelly sweets from my childhood, and don’t feel overly sticky.

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment Advanced Therapy, $37

This was my go-to lip balm for a really long time, and I went through about three tubes of it before I decided to try other products. It’s wonderfully hydrating (more so than the rest of the Fresh lip balms), really handy to use, glides on like a dream, and has great packaging. The only issue I had with it was that it didn’t fare well in warm conditions and got a bit melty.

Philosophy Kiss Me Tonight Intense Lip Therapy, $23

I find this functions best at night as a lip mask, giving you soft and chap-free lips when you wake up. If you’re someone who tends to peel at your dry lips during the day or get lazy about reapplying lip balm, give this a whirl.

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Lip Therapy, $21

In the last few years, I’ve noticed that my lips dry out so fast while on board a plane. I found myself having to reapply certain lip balms every 20 minutes, until the day I decided to pick this up at Sephora. It keeps your lips hydrated for a really long time, and I love taking it with me to cold or dry countries. It comes in a squeeze tube with a handy slanted applicator so you don’t have to use your hands, and it has a slightly minty smell to it which I love.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, $40

A colleague recommended this to me a while back when we were discussing liquid lipsticks and how they look horrible on dry lips. I bought it straight away and ended up really liking it. It comes in a pot with a tiny rubber spatula for applying it (hygiene is key), and has an almost solid cream formula that softens and becomes a balm on the lips. It stays on all night, which is amazing, and has a wonderfully fruity smell.

Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips, $26

This multi-purpose balm is a cult favourite, and can be used for dry skin anywhere on the body (yes, even your nipples). It has a thick creamy consistency which might make it a bit much for daytime use on the lips, but try it out at night and you might just fall in love. It’s a really handy travel companion too for any cold weather itches or dry spots that might be irritating you while you’re out.

Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1, $17

Last Christmas, I received a holiday set of these lip balms, and fell in love. The pear scent (flavour) was my absolute favourite, but all of them and the original are great lightweight lip balms for immediate relief. This balm contains squalane, lanolin and sweet almond oil as well as vitamins A and E.
