3 easy steps to achieving full-bodied and voluminous hair

If you’ve got flat, limp hair and want to find new ways to give your hair more volume and fullness, here are three easy things you can do

by Alyssa Dhaliwal  /   May 20, 2016
how to get fuller more voluminous hair volume - thumb

I had curly, frizzy and unruly hair throughout my teenage years, so I was understandably obsessed with shampoos that promised to smooth, tame and nourish my hair. When I hit my 20s, however, my hair began to tame somewhat, and I realised that it had become quite flat and limp while retaining some of the curl. I was still using all the same shampoos, which I eventually came to realise were completely weighing down my hair.

A hair analysis also revealed that my hair was more on the fine-to-medium end of the spectrum, unlike the medium-coarse texture I’d so long imagined. This meant that smoothing and anti-frizz shampoos and conditioners were making my hair look limp and greasy after just one day, and it wasn’t until a long-overdue trip to the hair salon that I realised my shampoos were actually clogging my scalp.

Read on for three important steps to having healthy and voluminous hair, beginning with what I think is the most important: Shampoo.

Volume-building shampoo & conditioner

Before you dive into volume-building, the first step is to make sure your scalp is clean. Clarifying or deep cleansing shampoos will do the trick, removing build-up caused by the rest of your hair products. Having a clean scalp also gives your hair more volume at the roots, and provides a blank canvas of sorts for a new wave of volumising products.

There are several volumising shampoo products out there, but two that I enjoy in particular are the Dove Volume & Nourishment Shampoo and Conditioner ($8.50 each) and L’oreal Paris Hair Expertise EverPure Volume Shampoo and Conditioner ($15.90 each). They do a great job at giving your hair a subtle boost of volume without any of the heaviness. Just don’t forget to use a clarifying shampoo every week to rid yourself of any residue, especially if you’re using volumising sprays aimed at your roots.

Protecting your hair

Blow-drying is the next step but first, you should make sure your hair is well-protected. Fine hair is of course the most susceptible to heat damage, but no matter your hair type, it’s always a good idea to protect your hair from heat when blow-drying it. Many haircare brands have heat protecting sprays, and some of my favourites hail from L’oreal Hair Expertise, Toni & Guy, Tresemme and Phyto.

On to the styling products. There are a couple of things you can use for different volumising effects. If you simply want more fullness at the crown of your head, for instance, simply spritz a root lifting spray along sections of your damp hair at the roots, then blow-dry in sections and try something I like to do from time to time, which is to dry my hair with my head of hair flipped over my forehead.

If you’re looking to get beachy textured volume in your hair, you can take the step above further by using a texturising or sea salt spray when your hair is about halfway dry. I find that many of these give your hair a fair bit of hold, so treat it as a single-day hair affair. Simply spray all over and finish drying. Heat from hair dryers can make your hair a little frizzy, but I find an easy way to get around this is to switch to a cool setting once your hair is no longer damp.
