Ask Jay: I'm experiencing first-date jitters

I’m experiencing first-date jitters after an 18-month dry spell. I’ve been rehearsing what to say at dinner, and trying different outfits to make an impression. Any advice for this
damsel in distress?

First piece of advice: Don’t rehearse. It can sound, well, rehearsed.

Honestly, unless you’re Meryl Streep, who can make a clunky script come off natural and charming, don’t rehearse for your dinner date. Just like in acting, you need to know your lines well to forget your lines and actually act.

You need to be confident in yourself to handle any dinner-date situation, and just react to whatever happens – being confident and spontaneous is better than wooden and rehearsed any day.

If you’re feeling nervous, tell him so, and get on with the best date of your life. You can do it!
