A press conference on a Sunday morning can be a little out of the blue, but for Ironman, Dr. Strange and Nebula, the press can be forgiving – after all, how often do you get Hollywood stars Robert Downey Jr., Benedict Cumberbatch and Karen Gillian alongside director Joe Russo and executive producer Trinh Tran in Singapore? After last year’s massive fan turnout for Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan for the promotion of ‘Civil War’, Marvel does it again with the inclusion of the franchise’s biggest names.
At the press conference, a few tidbits stood out – American actor Robert Downey Jr., despite suffering from jetlag, is very much himself and as his character Tony Stark. Think charisma, wit and suave. When someone in the crowd asked him why his character was holding an old flip phone, despite being equipped with new suit and weaponry, director Joe Russo jumped to the question to say if she was a fan of the film, she’d know his character was given the phone by Steve Rogers. Robert’s retort? “Burn!” You can’t help but agree with him.
Having released two Marvel films in a year for the past decades, the studio isn’t resting on their laurels – in fact, another 14 more are in the works. Benedict quipped: "The director and the producers are the ones with super powers. The line producers who worked out all of our schedules to do the film - it's all a small miracle." Joe chimed in too, “Logistically, this was the most complicated movie to put together in history. We shut down Hollywood for a year, because we had every actor working in the business scheduled somewhere in the movie."
