Back in 2009, two Japanese artists — fashion designer Yoshiki Hishinuma and painter Yoshitaka Amano — teamed up to create the persona of “Eve”, a fictional girl from a futuristic world for their exhibition at Opéra Garnier in Paris.
At Hishinuma’s first Singapore runway show at Fashion Week 2013 on October 13, this otherworldly inspiration returns; this time with a decidedly more new-age view of the future.
It’s a fantastical yet so enthrallingly beautiful fashion tale that Yoshiki Hishinuma has to tell, through 32 selected looks from his Spring Summer 2012 to Autumn Winter 2013 couture creations.
A look from Yoshiki Hishinuma Couture Autumn Winter 2013
If there is life out there in outer space, Hishinuma’s hopeful vision seems to suggest that these visitors will come in peace.
Models glided down the runway in long, flowy gowns and with paper crowns inspired by flora and fauna, appearing as friendly, mystical ambassadors with their show of meditative hand gestures.
Their dresses of choice? Flora-inspired gowns, with folds that curl around their bodices like petals of fresh flowers.

The Japanese textile and fashion designer’s use of folds on the organic fabrics appear at times like crushed paper on gowns, creating a three-dimensional effect that still had a sense of softness thanks to its paper-like appearance. However beautiful these gowns may look on the rack, Hishinuma’s designs are meant to be worn, with each textured fold gathered and scrunched up to flatter curves of the women who wear them.
Through such details, Hishinuma showed his mastery of textile manipulation on these gorgeous couture creations.
Yoshiki Hishinuma Couture Autumn Winter 2013
In his Autumn Winter 2013 couture collection, Hishinuma’s floral inspiration is let loose with greater abandon. There were plenty of flower-festooned dresses seen on the runway, be it as floral embroidery or hand-painted foliage. It was a hothouse of hibiscus, chrysanthemum and more flowers in unearthly saturated shades that continued that out-of-this-world theme on the runway.
Under Hishinuma’s deft hands, the costume element of his couture collection did not go awry. His sense of proportion makes even his more voluminous gowns still distinctly feminine and figure-flattering; certainly couture designs that the youthful socialites will want to be fitted into for their next gala occasion.
The Yoshiki Hishinuma Couture show was staged on October 13, 2013 at Fashion Week 2013 in Singapore.
Singapore Fashion Week 2013 runs at Marina Bay Sands, Convention Hall F until October 19, 2013. For more information on Fashion Week 2013 and schedule of shows, go to www.fidefashionweeks.com.
