We already know Carrie K. as the brand to go to for whimsical jewellery that “tell stories” in designer Carolyn Kan’s own unique ways. A new service introduced at the jeweller late last month now lets you tell your story, by deconstructing and reimagining your own heirloom or hand-me-down jewellery, which might be too dated to wear today.
Earlier this year, the local jewellery maker unveiled a new atelier at the National Design Centre, and with it, a new direction for the brand – from whimsical to witty – and new offerings made with high quality gems set in solid silver or 9K gold.

Along with its new direction, Carrie K. introduced a new Heirloom Revival service late last month as an addition to its existing Bespoke service, where customers can order one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces that tell the wearer’s own unique story. For the Heirloom Revival service, the element of storytelling remains, but instead of building the jewellery from scratch, parts of an old heirloom jewellery will be incorporated into the new piece.
Have an old jade piece, or an inherited diamond pendant? They can be resetted into new “modern, stylish and symbolic jewellery pieces”, like a diamond studded ring or a statement necklace in a design that celebrates a person, event, or memory special to the wearer.

Bespoke design fees start at $6,000 and the total price will vary with the quality, size and number of diamond and precious gems.

Own a piece of dated heirloom jewellery? Here’s how, and where, you can transform it into your new favourite accessory
Amethyst Fireworks Jade Ring
image
The ring was named after the client’s mother as she was likened to fireworks because she is always the life of the party. It uses a jade piece that was reset from a pendant and designed as a statement piece that evokes the imagery of fireworks, made from handpicked amethyst gems, wrapping round the jade in a starburst pattern.
Nak Diamond Ring
image
Named after ‘Nak’ – a term of endearment that the client’s mother used to address her by – the NAK ring utilises a design inspired by a style of typography that is meant to commemorate her mother. The diamonds on the ring were cut from a diamond pendant the client inherited and were arranged in a pattern that resembled stars sprinkled across the night sky.
Diamond Pebble Ring

The Pebbles ring is inspired by Colorado and the Grand Canyon – the locations where the happy couple met and he proposed respectively. As a reminder of their love of nature and the Canyon, the ring uses two different metals to create pebbles of different textures that symbolise the smooth and rough points in their relationship. Each pebble also signifies a milestone in their 17-year journey as a couple.
Jade Heart Earrings

The Jade Heart earrings came about by resetting two heart-shaped jade pieces from an heirloom brooch into a double-sided earring for versatility. This pair of earrings was made to commemorate the client’s mother and nothing speaks more to that than the handwritten ‘Xin’ (Chinese character for heart) which reflects her mother’s love.
Diamond Ruby Family Choker

Crafted in the style of a wrap around choker, this piece was also designed to include diamonds in a blooming pattern that aims to commemorate the client’s family. The ruby, the client’s birthstone, represents her and was reset from an heirloom pendant.
