The case for cycling shorts and blazers

Athleisure meets corporate for one of the biggest trends next season. Here’s how you can emulate this Spring/Summer'19 look yourself

Chances are, if you’re a total workout buff (or, y’know, actually into what it was originally created for – cycling), you probably own one of these. We’re referring to cycling shorts: The bottom-hugging, skin-tight Bermuda-length shorts that have up till now, only seen the light of day at pilates class or #CardioDay.

For months now, biker shorts have been inconspicuously bubbling underneath the surface since the Kardashians and Hadid sisters were photographed in them. And then came fashion month, where they were officially given the designer-approved stamp, leading us to believe that the biker short is indeed here to stay – and slay for SS19.

But it wasn’t as straightforward as just slapping the athleisure staple on the runway, biker shorts were instead given a professional makeover, being alternated with everything from formal blazer jackets, office-appropriate blouses, and sophisticated button-up tunics. Chanel paired black cycling shorts with an oversized fuchsia tweed blazer jacket, Fendi teamed theirs with a box shirt and a toolkit-style belt bag, while Jacquemus, Prada and Roberto Cavalli’s cycling shorts were fashioned in prints and punchy colours.

So, the celebs and designers have spoken, and there’s our cue to offer a rejoinder: Are you a fan of the biking short (it is admittedly super comfy), or do you consider it a fashion faux pas? If you err on the side of the former, we’ve got a list of biker shorts-plus-workwear combinations below to offer some inspiration. Keep calm and get your cycle shorts on.
