They evolved from butterfly tattoos we wore as children, to band names when we were teens. Then the time of gold accessory tattoos came, and now, Christian Dior might just be bringing the trend of statement-making tattoos.

The 90’s trend was seen at the House’s Spring-Summer 2018 Haute Couture collection as models walked down a checkered runway. In true Dior fashion, delicate tattoos featuring French quotes and phrases from Surrealist movement founder André Breton were written across the models’ collarbone in plain, but striking black font.

Some phrases seen included, “In the beginning it is not a matter of understanding, but of loving”, “Love is always before you. Love!” and “The imaginary is what tends to become real”.

Although the tattoos weren’t as compelling as the House’s previous political statements, Dior reminds us how the words (written in the 1920s) still remain current today – just as its other statement-making choices like 2017’s infamous “We should all be feminists” t-shirt, and 2018’s “Why have there been no great women artists” tee, which was written in 1971.

Of course, the tattoos weren’t the only eye-catching element – artistic, avant-garde masks; ethereal, optical illusion gowns; powerful two-pieces; eclectic earrings; exaggerated eyeliner. The pieces gave off dreamy, surreal vibes just like the venue itself, which saw artistic displays like ears and bird cages hanging from the ceiling.

Paired hand-in-hand, Dior successfully demonstrated true artistry through the visions of creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri. The end result? Beautiful tattoos with a punch of history. Would we be rocking them if they end up being sold? Just maybe.
