Wendy (also known as Shon Seung-wan) has come a long way. Although she is now a member of iconic girl group, Red Velvet, the multi-talented singer faced multiple rejections along the way. Her parents had forbade her from pursuing a career in music as they wanted her to focus on her studies, and even when they finally relented and allowed her to audition for Koreaboo’s Global Auditions in 2011, she failed to make the cut (although she did get into the top 15). YG Entertainment’s CEO also revealed that she had once auditioned for the company but was rejected.
It was merely fortuitous that she managed to catch the attention of SM Entertainment — she had accompanied a friend to the S.M. Global Audition in Canada in 2012 and ended up singing for them. The rest as they say, is history. She was first introduced as a member of SM Entertainment’s predebut group SM Rookies in March 2014 before she debuted as a member of Red Velvet in August 2014.
Apart from her successful career and solid status in the hallyu scene, she’s also known for her girlish sense of style. Want to look as put-together as her? We’ve culled three of her most feminine ensembles and show you how you can recreate these looks, but for cheaper. Looking like a K-pop star has never been so good (and cost friendly), until now.
1. Red’s the colour of love
Heading off to a date? There’s no better way to show your affection than with a red ensemble, a colour that represents love and passion. Over here, Wendy’s in a vermillion checkered skater dress (complete with bow) that makes her look like an adorable doll. Take a leaf from her book by dressing in a gingham checkered dress that cinches at the waist. Pair that with a pair of red socks and slip into black Mary Jane ballerina flats. Finish your look with a pair of statement earrings.

Topshop glitter socks, S$6.90

2. Shine bright like a diamond
Something sparkly makes its wearer stand out, and Wendy knows it. She wore a metallic ruffled mini dress that’s dainty and feminine yet show-stopping in its baby blue hue. Take inspiration from her by rocking a sequin embellished mini dress with a pair of sleek black pumps and some bedazzled drop earrings.

Glamorous sequin camisole dress, S$126, from Topshop
Lovisa black diamante teardrop earrings, AUD$25.99 (S$25)
Charles & Keith gem embellished leather pumps, S$89.90
3. Hang loose for casual Fridays
A printed ruffled number can seem mundane when worn alone, but when styled with the right pair of shoes, it can go from something laid-back on the weekends to a smart-casual piece for Fridays. Wendy elevated her look by styling her simple brown ruffled dress with a pair of contemporary white heels and pearls. We’ve decided to match our black star printed dress with a pair of statement white sandals for a more youthful twist. Add a set of au courant pearls to give your look a vintage spunk.
