Global colour authority Pantone has just announced that Viva Magenta 18-1750 is the colour that will be taking us into 2023. According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Colour Institute, the new hue “vibrates with vim and vigour”. And if you’ve been in the loop with Pantone’s previous colours of the year, then you would know that this year’s colour is a lot brighter and bolder than it was before.

Last year, we were introduced to Very Peri for the first time – a colour custom created for the Pantone Color of the Year program. Described as a “dynamic periwinkle blue with a vivifying violet red undertone”, Very Peri blends the “faithfulness and constancy of blue” with “the energy and excitement of red.

But this year’s Colour of the Year, on the other hand, is “powerful and empowering”, says Eiseman. Audacious, full of wit and inclusive of all, Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit.

And while it may often be mistaken for a red or pink hue, perhaps Viva Magenta is a different way to look at the year ahead – an uncertain time shaded with both promise and risk.

“It’s brave, it’s fearless, it depicts optimism and joy – and we know that we are all greatly in need of that,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

As we look into the year ahead of us, we’re no longer reeling from the pandemic. Instead, we are turned towards a better future. Laurie Pressman, Pantone’s vice president, says Viva Magenta represents a prevailing desire for optimism, resilience, outside-the-box thinking and technological innovation so as to create a better world. She adds, “We need courage and bravery, but we’re looking for something that promotes joy and is fun. Life right now is unconventional and challenging in many ways – I think we’re looking for things that help us escape.”

According to Laure, the previous years that have been characterised by uncertainty, have often meant colours that soothe, calm or uplift. But as we slowly shift away from the ongoing pandemic Viva Magenta is said to represent reassurance, confidence and connection in a world trying to get back on its feet.

For the past 25 years, The Pantone Color Institute’s choice is intended to reflect the latest trends across sectors including fashion, beauty, technology, design and home decor. On top of that, it also aims to capture the zeitgeist and set the tone for the year to come.
