Made famous by Balenciaga’s Fall 2016 collection and Rihanna, the slouchy jacket/shirt has seen a resurgence off the runway this year. Celebrities and the fashion public have still been spotted rocking their jackets, coats and shirts off the shoulder at both New York and Paris Fashion Week Spring 2018. Well, we can’t argue with why they love this trend. It’s a great way to upcycle your existing pieces and create a new style with old items, even if you don’t have a flair for cutting and sewing.

The trend could not be more apt for Singapore’s weather when it could be raining cats and dogs one moment, and scorching hot the next. It also delivers that desired ‘edge’ to your outfit – quite literally.

Puffer jacket

While the weather in Singapore is not yet cold enough for a puffer jacket, this outfit is suitable for when you travel to countries like Hong Kong and Taiwan where the temperature is around 10 to 20 degree celsius during winter.

Narelle Kheng styled a black puffer jacket peeled off her shoulders with a sheer striped top on the inside. A red camisole can be seen peeping through which adds a pop of colour to the casual look.

Oversized shirt

This off-the-shoulder ensemble from actress Jeanette Aw is fairly simple to recreate. All you need is an oversized button-up shirt which you can borrow (or steal) from your dad or partner’s wardrobe. Button the top asymmetrically, leaving a few unbuttoned at the top. Depending on how many buttons you leave unbuttoned, you can wear the shirt off one shoulder, or both.

Workwear jumpsuit

An actual model is the obvious choice if you are looking for a model off-duty style inspiration. Chinese model He Sui styled a velvet jumpsuit, a luxurious take on the workwear one piece, with a Nike sports bra. This is great for when you’re feeling lazy or if you’re out running errands. Couple it with a pair of sneakers like He Sui and you’re good to go.

Co-ord set

Leave it to radio DJ and singer Tabitha Nauser to wow us with her fusion of workwear and street style. We absolutely love how her stylist dressed her in a Fendi co-ord set and a yellow Fenty Puma by Rihanna sports bra to complement the contrasting yellow details on the checked jacket.

Tip: To keep the jacket off your shoulders, cinch your waist with a belt. This prevents the top from moving about, at the same time gives shape and structure to the silhouette.

Baggy jacket hanging off one shoulder

You can never go wrong with a monochromatic ensemble. Influencer and Exhibit founder Yoyo Cao combined a baggy jacket with a sleeveless mock neck top and denim skirt. She left the jacket hanging loosely off one shoulder to emulate an effortless and “I couldn’t care less” feel.

Tip: Leave your jacket unbuttoned/unzipped and unbelted so you can easily pop the sleeve back up on your shoulder when you’re feeling cold.
