If the simple pencil skirt or classic A-line version is too boring for you, why not rev things up with a peplum this season. The hip adornment was big news on the Spring Summer 2012 catwalks and is set to be one of the biggest trends of season.

Marc by Marc Jacobs sexed up a black knee-length, slim-fitting skirt with a peplum, using a version which had a gap over the tummy so was still flattering. Paired with a red-and-black stripy top and simple clutch, it was one of the most chic ways to rock the trend.

Jason Wu opted for a different take on the look. He paired white hot pants with a simple white t-shirt, which was belted and boasted a fluttering peplum poking out beneath.

This is a look which is relatively easy to wear, but probably best for a special occasion. Skirts with peplums need to be paired with a slim-fitting top so all eyes are on the gathering. Try a bright skirt with a dark top, or if you want to be really fashion forward go for conflicting patterns.

Taking a tip from Wu and going for a top with a peplum is an easy way to try out the look, but you’ll need a statement belt to show off the frills the best. © COVER MEDIA/ IMAGES: SHOWBIT
