Everyone knows purple and burgundy have been big business this season – but what should you do if you want something a little bolder? Step forward cobalt blue, which is one of the hottest – but most overlooked – shades to wear during Fall/Winter 12.
Label of the moment Balenciaga used the hue in many different ways. While chiffon skirts were carved from the bright colour, they were kept knee-length and boasted a darker under piece to protect models’ modesty.
Those looking for something a little less risqué could take a lead from the French label and opt for a cosy cocoon coat in the eye-popping shade. Military jackets also featured, boasting white detailing to break up the colour.
At Lanvin, there were beautiful body conscious dresses in cobalt blue. With built-up shoulders and cut to skim, rather than hug, the body, the look was perfect for a fancy evening out.
Creative director Alber Elbaz also used the shade in coats, with up-turned collars and voluminous sleeves ensuring the look was always unique.
Richard Nicoll and Preen also tackled the colour and it looks set to be popular for the coming Spring/Summer 13 season. Granted it isn’t the look of choice for shrinking violets and the super bright shades might be a little unflattering, but the trick here is to experiment.
They might seem scary, but if you have a dark complexion bold cobalt will look beautiful. Those who are fairer might look swamped if they go too bright, so try toning things down with a blue coat you can wear with darker colours. Or if you must go bright try a pop – perhaps a bright clutch or scarf to kick things off. – COVER MEDIA
