Spanning over an epic ten days, rendering it the longest fashion week there is among the others, it’s evident that Paris is the place to look at in terms of singling out the general standout trends for next season.
Across the board, we saw an array of uplifting looks from the inclusion of denim in hyper-feminine looks at Miu Miu and Chanel, to a fiesta of fruit-centric prints at Gucci. Keep a close watch on these five trends for some pre-season-plotting, we say it’s about high time to get started on those wishlists.
Denim venom

The timely brilliance of the ‘90s revival is felt with the prevalence of denim on the runways of Paris. Acid washed and rocking ultra-high-rise cuts at Balmain, distressed – with stringy, frayed hems dangling above jewelled pumps at Miu Miu and super-bleached patchworked next to a stone-washed panel at Isabel Marant. Chanel’s take on denim was less heavily treated and instead presented itself in lightweight, loose-fitted jeans one can certainly wear to the beach. It’s official ladies and gentlemen, the de rigueur denim material is a key player for Spring 2019.
Fruit picking

Fruits are about to be in high demand next season – and we’re not referring to those you can pick up at the local supermarket. Nope, these fruits are a la mode, designer-approved. Gucci pushes the envelope in maximalism once again, and everything from bags to clutches and pants were garnished with look-at-me strawberry prints. Altuzarra had a couple of glossy pink co-ords that brimmed with paillettes and pastures of berry-esque flowers. And we’d leave it to Thom Browne to really go all out; This show was bananas! Whether they came as gigantic bejewelled headgear, vibrantly printed on coats or in some extreme cases, dressing the face of the models, these fruits are fully ripe for the picking.
Collar-blocking

The jacket du jour for spring has a contrasting lapel – preferably spangled ala Saint Laurent or rocking edgy exaggerated shapes like at Givenchy and Louis Vuitton. Serving up empowering Working Girl vibes, the tailored tuxedo jacket is a mainstay in every woman’s closet. But since we have some room to experiment further from #basic, we’re all for this trend. This is colourblocking 2.0.
Belle of the puff-ball

Backtrack everyone, sleeves aren’t the only thing receiving the puffed-up treatment next season – the dresses are too. Ultra-mini, with a voluminous silhouette, these dresses are the grown up version of your favourite ‘poofy’ tulle confections. Celine made a case for the bubble skirt with a dark blue number with reflective dots and an empire waistline. Valentino presented a more daytime look to Celine’s party glamour counterpart with an off-the-shoulder silhouette complete with abstract prints, while Jacquemus had a billowing frothy white dress with a halterneck.
Dresses in white

Nothing energises a spring wardrobe quite as much as a classic white dress. Clean and crisp with a bohemian sensibility, the white dress epitomises the fresh invigorating spirit of spring. We’re taking notes from Chanel’s mother-of-pearl cardigan dress, Chloe’s urban-bohemian number with a plissed capelet, or Dior’s fluid chiton-style maxi; This will be our new everyday go-to look come spring.
