Did you know that Dior’s bar jacket was a fashion and historical beacon that signified the end of World War II? First introduced in Christian Dior’s 1947 debut collection, this number was part of the “New Look”, which featured rounder shoulders, a cinched waist and a bouffant skirt. It channeled opulence and femininity – something that wasn’t achievable during the seven years of war (as sartorial restrictions, such as military uniforms, were implemented during this period).

This was a milestone in high-fashion, and the jacket became an important object for the French maison. Subsequent designers who took the reins at Dior had their own interpretation of the bar jacket: Gianfranco Ferre blew the jacket up into an above-the-knee dress in 1991, John Galliano gave it a whimsical twist in 2010, and Raf Simons transformed it into an elegant coat for the brand’s Couture FW collection in 2012.

Today (Feb 12), the bar jacket has become a must-have for many celebrities and street-style stars. Here, we show you five celebs who are stans of this number – and how you can style it to look just like them.
