Stella McCartney wanted “to run” to Harrods to buy a bottle of her late mother’s favourite scent after realising it was still on sale.
The designer is the daughter of Linda and Paul McCartney. Jean Patou’s Joy was an integral smell forever linked to her childhood because her mother wore it.
The 40-year-old thought the scent had been discontinued, but was over the moon when she was told it was still available at the iconic London department store.
“When I was growing up, she [my mother] wore Van Cleef & Arpel’s First and Jean Patou’s Joy, which sadly isn’t around any more. [Told it is sold in Harrods] That makes me want to run there right now and buy it!” she told the UK edition of InStyle magazine. “Smelling it takes me back and that’s what I want to do, create timeless scents.”
Stella also revealed that her new scent L.I.L.Y. was inspired by her family memories. The designer explained why the different notes of the scent are so meaningful to her, adding she wanted to create a “personal” fragrance.
“[My mother Linda] was a lover of flowers, especially lily of the valley and I guess I’ve inherited that. Everyone wants a fragrance that lets their personality shine through, not one that gives them a headache. I’ve been thinking about his perfume since my first Stella launched in 2003,” she said.
“I love lily of the valley – it was in my wedding bouquet – but I wanted to match its femininity with something tough, so I added truffle and moss which is almost aggressive. This is similar to how I work with my ready-to-wear collections.”
