Fashion designer Stella McCartney is famed for her responsibly sourced garments, having previously introduced vegan high heels to her label.

Her latest collection will feature five pairs of eco-friendly sunglasses, three with acetate frames and two with metal frames.

The styles use a different type of plastic to be which is kinder to the environment.

Whereas most sunglasses use plastic derived from petroleum, Stella’s is a blend which includes a 54 per cent contribution from castor oil seeds, a renewable resource.

The glasses also utilise a new acetate plastic, which combines cellulose with “natural plasticisers” derived from citric acid.

Stella is incredibly proud of her new sunglasses, but admits that all the experimenting has been difficult.

“The greatest challenge was the amount of time that was spent on research and testing to get the best quality product possible with the highest performance in terms of resistance, while still maintaining the style and finish we always try to achieve,” she was quoted as saying by WWD. © COVER MEDIA
