From over 255 entries and 13 countries, to a mere 12 finalists from seven countries, the names for the Star Creation front-runners are finally out.

This year, there are four designers from South Korea, two from Singapore, two from Malaysia and one each from China, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand, of which three will move on to launch a capsule collection at next year’s Star Creation, win a cash prize of $10,000 from Audi Singapore, this year’s title sponsor, and also a one-year work attachment with FJ Benjamin.

Star Creation 2012 finalists announced

The theme this year is “Fashion without Frontiers”, and contestants were judged on their ability to come up with six original but commercially-viable designs based around that topic.

According to Mr David Wang, three-time Star Creation judge and vice-president of the Textile and Fashion Federation Singapore (TaFf), the variety of ways in which the theme was represented was quite astounding.

“The theme was deliberately chosen to allow for a wide interpretation, but we were surprised at how far some designers were able to push it while still infusing their collections with both personal and cultural styles. This year, we’re going to be treated to everything from military-inspired womenswear to bold and unorthodox draping. It is going to be quite spectacular,” he said.

As before, Audi will be choosing one designer out of the final three to win the Audi Young Designer Award; the designer whose collection is deemed the one that best exemplifies Audi’s spirit of innovation, technology and progression, will win an additional $10,000 as the cash prize.

These twelve finalists will be able to transform their designs from paper into real-life by showcasing their six designs on May 14 at the Tent@Orchard so there’s only about two months left before we get to see all their creativity come to life.
