If you think that eco-conscious fashion can only look as dull and drab as old clothing, these polished and creative designs are sure to change your mind.

The eight finalists of the EcoChic Design Award 2013 have unveiled some of their key pieces for the sustainable fashion design competition. These final looks will be shown in a runway show during the upcoming Hong Kong Fashion Week in January 2014.

Singapore graphic designer Phee Ng is among the final eight designers selected for the finale show; she spoke to herworldPLUS earlier in October 2013, about her creations for EcoChic Design Award 2013.

And the first look of one of Ng’s realised fashion sketches certainly impresses.

The bodice of Ng’s dress was made from scraps of secondhand clothing, while a total of six pairs of jeans were cut up and sewn with other upcycled old fabrics for the skirt. There is also an uniquely Singapore element to this dress — its unusual origami-like folds were inspired by the Esplanade theatre.

Held annually since 2011, the EcoChic Design Award aims to feature and inspire emerging young designers to create clothing made from sustainable and eco-conscious practices. Old fabrics are upcycled and material wastage is minimised where possible.

You’ll soon be able to see Phee Ng’s completed dresses in Singapore, along with the works of the other EcoChic Design Award 2013 finalists as well.
