Starting to become better known, Modement has been around since 2010 and has always offered unisex looks for guys and girls with an emphasis on minimal cutting and strong silhouettes. Designer Aries Sin Mei-Yuk’s label already has celebrity fans like Miriam Yeung, Candy Lo, Denise Ho, Andy Hui, Endy Chow and Ellen Loo, and it won’t be long before the brand is picked up internationally as well.

On top of the interesting design and concept, Modement is also known for it’s social responsibility; the brand is entirely manufactured in Hong Kong by various social enterprises that help disadvantaged individuals.

The brand’s Autumn Winter 2014-15 collection has been entitled “Moments” and is, remarkably, inspired by manholes ‒ yes, those round metal covers found embedded in the streets. “We might have crossed hundreds of manholes everyday yet we seldom noticed the beautiful patterns and shapes on top of its rust and tears. They are simply the proof of times,” explains Sin.

While esoteric in concept, the translation into sharp, tailored garments that travel from 19th century shapes to more modern streetwear-inspired bomber jackets and sweatshirts combined with softer, “net” separates actually makes for a very wearable collection. Even if I’m having a hard time seeing the “manhole inspiration” in the pieces.

The palette is mostly in blacks and greys, but touches of shocking pink, electric blue and rusted red (the manholes?) lighten up the range, although some of the fabrics like the felted and embellished wool are a touch heavy for Singapore’s weather, the lighter “net” pieces will certainly work.

Modement is a label that has something interesting going on, it’s certainly not cookie-cutter, so if you’re into fashion, it’s worth checking out the brand at the Blueprint Emporium shopping days that are open to the public since it’s not yet stocked in Singapore.
