Saloni Rathor designer Saloni Shrestha has been making waves in the regional fashion industry. She was invited to present again at the Re-Birth tradeshow Make One’s Mark in Tokyo, that’s twice now, and has major plans for the brand after a recent “US fashion mission trip” which Saloni says was “a huge learning experience and I have exciting plans for the label”.
“My direction from here onward is towards synergising edginess into femininity and building strength on followers through a good balance of price and quality,” says Saloni, “I can also say that I am much more proud of the quality I am now offering.”
Quality which can be seen in the Saloni Rathor Autumn Winter 2013 collection entitled The Passage, which Saloni describes as being “a fragile, exotic and romantic collection filled with rich colours and elaborate prints of blemished butterfly motifs and shadows of the enigmatic Dutch dancer, the Mata Hari”.
What this translates into is a series of looks that combine clean lines with sumptuous colours like claret plum, jade green and persian blue offset with neutrals like grey and white. The fabrics are particularly good this season; Indian silk, Indonesian lace and Japanese cotton are embellished with fringe and digital prints.

There are some particularly pretty combinations of silks and old gold mesh, the most successful of which is the Chemodie top and skirt, the Grace skirt and the Weaved In Love jacket – this is a particularly nice piece of “patchwork” that has created a real signature jacket.
Less successful are the draped silk pieces in single colours; the addition of lace to the bottom of a long jade green gown looks misplaced as there’s no laced added to the other, similar long dresses in the collection. The inserts of old gold mesh on the Samara dress tie it into the other pieces like the Chemodie but set it apart from the rest of the collection.

The digital prints are adequate, but not particularly exciting, which is a shame. If the prints were more in line with the fabrics used in the patchwork pieces like the Forever top the whole collection would have been much more cohesive.
Once again there appear to be too many ideas going on in one collection. Saloni Rathor is a label that has huge potential, if only the multiple ideas can be reigned in, and the best of them expanded upon.
However, if you’re looking for something a little fabulous for your festive events, and you love a good shot of colour, the long, jewel-bright silk dresses from Saloni Rathor Autumn Winter 2013 will
