As far as we know, Japan is the only country that gives us weatherproof plastic covers for our bags and our shopping.

While this concept has yet to take off here (where we get almost 170 days of rain every year), the idea is now for sale at Balenciaga and Chanel this season.

The former’s Cape Bag is a calfskin top handle that has its own one-size-fits-most slip-on polyurethane cover with a magnetic top closure, to shield your bags – Balenciaga or not – from the rain, sun, your new indigo jeans, bird poo, or young children at meal times. $4,670.

Chanel’s take is an individually sold, leather-trimmed PVC and grosgrain cover that fits up to a Jumbo sized Chanel 2.55 bag. $820.

And here are the more affordable options we promised: Local online retailer CloverSac sells its version of the raincover at $24, each of which comes with additional dry and wet bags to store the cover before and after use. The top opening of the slip-on cover seals with velcro and is adjustable to accommodate most bags.

US e-tailer The Handbag Raincoat also offers similar covers in six designs and three sizes with prices starting from just USD$11 (SGD$14.50) each. Unfortunately, the store only ships within the US for now, but that’s nothing a good freight forwarding service can’t solve.
