Nicola Formichetti is “completely hooked” on bags since designing his limited-edition bag.
The creative director of luxury fashion house Thierry Mugler was commissioned by Shopbop to create an exclusive bag for the online retailer.
The Muglerette features panda graffiti prints and with only 20 around in total, is extremely limited edition.
The party at Standard’s Boom Boom Room in New York City marked the launch and also a change in Nicola’s attitude towards handbags.
“Actually, I never liked the idea of bags,” he laughed to Elle.
“I would say, ‘Why do so many of my friends spend so much money on these b***dy bags?’ But once I started designing them, I was completely hooked. There are all of these blogs about bags. It’s a whole other industry, and I’m really excited to be a part of it. We’re very small and just starting now, so for this collaboration with Shopbop, I just wanted to make it even more personal. More me, with Mugler.”
The cross-body bag is a boxy, dark satchel with the graffiti prints scrawled across in pink.
Whereas the designer’s apparel may not be accessible to all, he hopes to reach a wider audience with his accessories.
“Our girl is very much the Mugler girl. She’s very sexy and modern. A little bit hard and strong. I wanted to stick to that. I know that not every girl can wear a piece of Mugler; it’s such a strong silhouette. But it’s different with a bag. I just imagined my girlfriends in New York, London, Paris, or Tokyo because they know how to mix and match,” he explained.
The Muglerette M handbag costs US$1,945 (S$2411) and is available at Shopbop.
