Sketches done by Karl Lagerfeld

After Vivienne Westwood and Jason Wu, next in line on the Melissa list of superstar designer collaborators is none other than Karl Lagerfeld. The renowned designer extends his fashion reign into the world of fun plastic shoes with the Melissa + Karl Lagerfeld collection. His first partnership with a Brazilian brand also sees his first experience creating shoes entirely out of plastic.

“I had never worked with plastic in this way before. It’s not the classic technique, I am used to working with more traditional techniques for Fendi, Chanel and Lagerfeld shoes,” explains Lagerfeld of the differences. “My inspiration was the native country of the brand, celebrating the Brazilian ‘joie de vivre’”.

The first Melissa + Karl Lagerfeld capsule collection sees Lagerfeld wielding his design prowess in the creation of two new and exclusive designs – the Melissa Ginga + Karl Lagerfeld and Melissa Melissima + Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld pays tribute to Melissa’s country of origin with the seductive “Ginga” in a colour palette inspired by Brazil’s national flag while the “Melissima”’s sleek design balances femininity with power and elegance.

Two existing Melissa styles – the Incense and Glam – have also been updated by Lagerfeld for the collection. The designer has injected some tongue-in-cheek humour in the scented Melissa Incense + Karl Lagerfeld – the heel is a glittery ice cream cone!

The Melissa + Karl Lagerfeld collection will be available from August 12, 2013, at the Mdreams boutique, #B2-03, Wheelock Place.
