Beloved among Hong Kong’s hip crowd for its quirky, Asian-inspired fashion and decor, lifestyle label Goods of Desire will soon be making its home here in Singapore at the Central in Clarke Quay, come end June.

The 6,000 square foot outlet will be the first Goods of Desire flagship store outside of Hong Kong, and it will carry the brand’s signature range of tongue-in-cheek clothing, furniture, homeware and gifts, all with a quintessentially Cantonese flavour.

Launched in 1996 by design gurus Douglas Young and Benjamin Lau, Goods of Desire is still going strong because it doesn’t just plaster Oriental symbols all over its products. Instead, it takes elements of the Chinese aesthetic and re-interprets it with a sense of humour.

For instance, motifs of old Hong Kong, such as cream cracker boxes, advertisements from a 1950s daily and rustic mailboxes are given a new lease of life in the form of cute bags, tea sets and even underwear.

Iconic Goods of Desire goodies to look out for include its newspaper-fabric cushions and clothing, the beautiful Double Happiness dinnerware set cleverly engraved with xi, the Chinese word for happiness, and the Yaumati series of chic stationery including the ingenious pencil case that resembles old-school Chinese ballet flats.

There’s also the infamous collection of products printed with the slogan Delay No More —which, in Cantonese, sounds like a profanity. With all the controversy and cheekiness that is intrinsic to the Goods of Desire label, why has the brand chosen to set up its first overseas flagship store in rather rule-laden Singapore?

“Evolving from a colonial past to its present cosmopolitan climate, modern and undeniably Asian all at once, Singapore is truly an ethnic melting pot steeped in both tradition and innovation,” said Goods of Desire’s co-founder Young. “It has always been my dream to show the rest of the world the Hong Kong I know, and I cannot think of a more perfect place to start with than Singapore.”

Goods of Desire will open at the end of June 2012 at the Central, 6 Eu Tong Sen Street, Singapore 059817. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/goodsofdesire.sg or follow them on Twitter at @goodsofdesiresg.
