Singapore fashion label Ong Shunmugam continues its brief of creating Asian-inspired designs for the modern woman with its third collection, “Prints Charming”.
Based on traditional Asian textiles, the fabrics of the garments are the focal point and feature fabulous fabrics like Batik Pesisir, Batik Cirebon, Indian and Cambodian brocades, songket and silk. Traditionally masculine shapes are also featured, putting the “Prince Charming” into the concept.
“We’ve taken archetypal masculine pieces like the shirt, the trouser and even the bolero – and reconfigure them so they retain a sense of a woman’s physique,” says designer Priscilla Shunmugam.
“It’s [also] purely deliberate that we turned stereotypically constraining outfits like the sari and the kebaya on their heads by liberating them with practicality, and on the other hand, took the long forgotten samfu and rehashed the Chinese woman’s pantsuit.”
Another interesting fact about this emerging label is that all the designs from the collection can be customised by fit or in different fabrications and colour ways, so you’re sure to get something that is distinctively you.
Although this is only Ong Shunmugam’s third release, the brand has been garnering international attention. Debuting at the 2012 Blueprint tradeshow earlier this year, the label was picked up by New York cult boutique Pixie Market; it’s also just been announced as one of only two Singapore labels being taken to show in Paris for fashion week by Forward Fashion Now.
For fashionistas looking to support the Singapore fashion industry and make a statement about Asian pride, this is one label well-worth investigating.
The Ong Shunmugam Prints Charming collection is priced from $249-$429 and is available by-apointment-only from Atelier Ong Shunmugam, Hong Leong Building #B1-36, 16 Raffles Quay, Tel: 6223 4804 or email: email@example.com and online at shop.ongshunmugam.com.
