Chinese designers set to shineWhile the increasing popularity of European luxury brands in China continues to be a hot topic, Chinese designers themselves are becoming more and more prevalent, with online Italian luxury retail company Yoox Group announcing the addition of five Chinese creators to its sub-site thecorner.com.

In collaboration with Vogue China, Yoox will place Uma Wang, Christine Lau, Riko Manchit Au, Shangguan Zhe and Zou You on the Vogue Talents Corner at thecorner.com’s Chinese section.

The web focus comes as Chinese consumers are increasingly buying products online, with 18 pieces from the designers to be available on the website until Spring 2012.

The model for the Vogue Talents Corner is similar to that of the Vogue CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Fashion Fund category on thecorner, which offers access to the newest creations by the finalists of the annual mentoring and cash prize, which was this year won by Joseph Altuzarra.

The five creators in Vogue Talents Corner have the approval of Vogue China, and will feature in the January 2012 issue under the theme “New Chinese Energy”.

“Two years ago, I wouldn’t have said there was a big market for locally designed goods and boutiques, but China moves very fast,” Vogue China’s editor Angelica Cheung told The Wall Street Journal.

A showcase of the five Vogue Talents Corner creators’ Fall/Winter 11 collections took place in Beijing last week, with WWD noting many of the pieces on display were dark or neutral in tone, with heavy fabrics and drapes also common features.

The five selected creators have already gained attention in their native country as well as on an international scale. Shanghai-based Wang has been working with American creator Diane Von Furstenberg and has also followed in the footsteps of designers including Manish Arora and Jean-Charles de Castelbajac in collaborating on a line of Swatch watches which will be available as of March 2012. Wang also showcased her creations during Italy’s Milano Unica fashion show earlier this year. — AFP RELAXNEWS
