The fashion industry is mourning over the passing of French designer Azzedine Alaia, 77, well-known for his body-hugging knit dress that’s adored by the likes of supermodels Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford.

A visionary designer, Azzedine has always been vocal about not buying the likes of the whole ‘see now/shop now’ movement – why would he? Over the last four decades, he’s always created his clothes with “his own hands”, just like how he would make sculptural designs he once learned. He doesn’t feed into the Instagram trends nor hype, and is happy concentrating and growing his brand’s aesthetics through his knits collection, which make up about 60 per cent of his label. They exude boldness and freedom, just like how Azzedine would’ve stand against the test of time.

With his shocking passing, many of his close friends from the fashion industry, including models and muses have shared their tributes on social media. Here are some of the touching ones:

Singer Lady Gaga posted a few pictures of herself in Azzedine’s famous dresses, and proudly sharing behind-the-scenes of American Music Awards, which happened 19 November. The gingham dress was one of Azzedine’s body-con dresses:

Singer Rihanna posted a tender moment she shared with the designer, with the caption: “my dear ALAIA…. you will live on forever. rip.”

When I was a young girl I cherished this boot so much … and with no knowledge of what brand was what, I just gravitated to super ILL things that aesthetically made sense for me. Cause As long as I’ve got that good shoe and that accessory speaks, all else is a matter of shape. Thank you for sharing your gift brother. What I’ve learned about your ART in the past few days has made me reach back for even more. Learning. You are So extremely talented .. By the way -everything else I had on that day was thrift or vintage. Those boots made it look like a million bucks tho. you will live on and on …eb.”
