Proenza Schouler’s Fall/Winter 2013 collection was inspired by softness.

Designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez presented their latest line at the Gilded Age 5 Beekman Street building in the financial district last night, closing Wednesday’s New York Fashion Week shows.

The venue is being redeveloped at the moment after spending years abandoned and was the perfect choice for the collection.

“We were really into the idea of soft, all the possibilities,” Lozaro told New York Times.

At first glance the inspiration wasn’t totally apparent, as many of the silhouettes seemed stiff and structured. Instead, the softness was apparent in the shapes and fabric of the pieces – rounded shoulders made from tactile cloth such as bouclé and tulle.

As has been the case on many of this season’s runways, a monochrome palette reigned supreme. The first look saw a tight black pencil skirt paired with a bold white jacket, without a collar with which only fastened at the model’s chest.

The large winter coat with rounded shoulders and which falls to below the knee also made an appearance – another staple in the Fall/Winter 13 collections. At Proenza Schouler it was teamed with a simple white mini-dress, with an envelope clutch making up the accessories.

Later leather came down the runway, with a pair of ankle-grazing pants in the fabric teamed with a polo neck in black and a white knee-length coat.

Dresses were also a big look, for the most part coming in greys and fitted tightly to the body. One boasted a bulky feather skirt in black and grey, while others had flattering waist belts. — Cover Media
