Prabal showed his Fall/Winter 13 collection at New York Fashion Week on Saturday. The military baroque-inspired line has been praised by critics for its modern take on style; with the collection boasting a muted colour palette. Army green and navy blue took centrestage, followed closely by wintry white and scarlet red dresses.
Touches of baroque embroidery appeared on army jackets and slim-cut pants, boosting the glamour quotient of the collection.
One of the key outfits boasted a pair of skin-tight khaki pants and matching army jacket which was given sex appeal thanks to the tight fit and huge peplum that jutted from the waist below and cinched black belt. With a collar edged in black fur, and leather harnesses strapped across the model’s bodice, this was warrior-chic at its very best.
The designer also helped kick off show season with a lavish carnival-themed party last week, to mark the launch of his diffusion line Prabal Gurung for Target: A Love Story.
He is proud to be teaming up with the high street retailer and hopes it will win him new fans.
“I have this… niche audience, it’s at a certain price point… for me, it’s it more about, ‘How do I get to the audience, the larger audience, the rest of America and let them know my own story?'” he explained.
Prabal’s pieces have been worn by US First Lady Michelle Obama, who he has worked with to achieve the right look. Britain’s Duchess of Cambridge has also opted for outfits by the designer, even though he has never been in touch with her and never sent her options.
“I don’t know how it happened and I was in shock,” he laughed.
