It is no secret that the inimitable Karl Lagerfeld is the creative genius behind Chanel, Fendi, and his eponymous label, but the fashion icon’s numerous stints behind the lens have also garnered him much critical acclaim.
The tireless multi-hyphenate – who only began pursuing photography in 1987 – has not only headed every advertising campaign for the aforementioned fashion houses, but also received the Lucky Strike Design Award from the Raymond Loewy Foundation and the cultural prize from the German Photographic Society.
So fans of the sartorial superstar will be pleased to note that a piece of Kaiser Karl has now arrived on our shores, with the organisers of Men’s Fashion Week 2011 Singapore recently unveiling a photo exhibition titled ‘Adnan Taletovich by Karl Lagerfeld’.
The exhibition, which runs until April 23, and is located at South Colonnade, Level 1, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.
Specially flown in from Shanghai in conjunction with the Mens’ Fashion Week 2011 event, the showcase features a collection of photographs taken by Karl Lagerfeld and model-photographer Adnan Taletovich, who is a favourite subject of the iconic designer and has collaborated with him for several photo shoots.
“Art has always been an important and integral component of the entire Marina Bay Sands integrated resort. The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, with its unique architecture and concept, has been a key contributor towards making us Asia’s most exciting lifestyle destination,” said Mr. John Postle, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands Executive Director.
“Art, such as this incredible collection of photographs by the sensational Karl Lagerfeld, is the epitome of what we are trying to create here – a lifestyle experience which incorporates creativity in a premier shopping environment – celebrating the beautiful concept boutiques and restaurants created for our shoppers.
Frank Cintamani, Chairman of Men’s Fashion Week 2011 Singapore and curator of this exhibition, added, “We are delighted at the privilege to present this timeless photo exhibition shot by one of the most iconic and notable designers of the fashion world today during Men’s Fashion Week 2011 Singapore.
“Fashion and photography are inextricably linked and these works that explored the symbiotic relationship between the photographer and his subject, can serve as inspiration to both fashionistas and the public alike.”
The photographs – which also feature acclaimed models like Linda Evangelista, Helena Christensen and Patricia Velasquez – are shot in black-and-white, and reflect Lagerfeld’s perception of the world around him, the influence of silent films on his work, as well as his love for theatre.
Many of the images in the exhibition were taken in the 1990s at the German designer’s homes in Paris and Monte Carlo, and several pieces in the collection depict candid, off-scene moments – including one that shows Christensen playfully pulling off a towel that Taletovich has wrapped around him – that are bound to give Lagerfeld devotees a glimpse into his glamourous lifestyle.
Regarding his collaboration with the fashion icon, Tletovich said: “There was excitement in everything we did and I caught his imagination.Every shoot was very much acting and not just posing as a model.”
‘Adnan Taletovich by Karl Lagerfeld’ will take place from March 23 to April 23 this year, and is located at South Colonnade, Level 1, The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. The photo exhibition is free to the public.
