LONDON – Since the return of British luxury brand Burberry to London Fashion Week in 2009, the brand’s biannual runway show has been one of the most anticipated gatherings during fashion week. Celebrities, editors and fashion personalities come together in a especially built large tent in beautiful Kensington Gardens.

This season for the Autumn Winter 2015-16 show, British pop star Sam Smith, actress Maggie Gyllenhall, models Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Jourdan Dunn and Cara Delevingne and photographer Mario Testino were just SOME of the celebrities spotted front row (mind you, Naomi was late and had to squeeze in next to Mario just minutes before the show began … Even La Campbell tries to be on time for Burberry!). On top of these luminaries a bunch of Asia’s hottest stars were also squeezed into the front row, including up-and-coming Malaysian fashion personality Marion Caunter and Korean star Kim Min Hee.

A live performance from British singer songwriter, Clare Maguire (who also performed during Burberry’s Autumn Winter 2015 Menswear show) served as the runway music (including the song “Give Me” which was actually composed for the show), and she was accompanied by London Contemporary Voices (the singers were stacked around the edges of the tent), The Langley Sisters and her band.

The Autumn Winter 2015 collection is entitled Patchwork, Pattern & Prints and is, according to the show notes, about “relaxed yet intricate collection of dramatic silhouettes, handcrafted embroidery, and detailed embellishment.” Basically a lot of handcraft-y stuff which gave the whole thing a totally bohemian vibe.

The first look made the theme obvious with its poncho in paisley and floral prints; embellished with fringes and worn over more prints and patchwork suede thigh-high boots … totally boho luxe with a major dash of 70s (think Jesus Christ Superstar) thrown in for good measure.

Burberry’s trademark trench coat got a complete makeover in a floral blue and burgundy print; a makeover that continued throughout the collection in a wide range of large prints, rich colours and various textures. Long high-waisted dresses (more boho hippie chic) and short A-line dresses (a bit more Swingin’ Sixties in style) in sheer lace and suede dominated the runway worn with the patchwork boots or suede booties embellished with floppy fringe.

Fringe was everywhere … On the boots, the new bucket bag, on ponchos, clutch bags, dresses, scarves and even on a trench coat. Aside from floral and paisley prints, a few animal prints and the famous house check were also used adding to the whole patchwork feel of the collection. Adding even more trippy-hippie feel to the show were the new Burberry Round Shades sunglasses which were also launched at the show.

Although Burberry’s chief creative and chief executive officer, Christopher Bailey, said that the collection was based more on “… the idea of folk art and craftsmanship — and people who learn to do things with their hands …”, the end result was a show with a strong 70s-hippie-boho feel making it very on-trend for the coming season.

For Singapore shoppers who love colour, print, fringing and relaxed shapes (which is just about everyone, right?) the Burberry Prorsum AW15 collection is going to be one you’ll want to save up for.
