Olivier Theyskens’ Fall/Winter 13 line was inspired by “futurism”.

The designer showed his latest collection for Theyskens’ Theory at New York Fashion Week yesterday. He is known for creating dark pieces and while this was apparent, this time around the outfits also had a fresh twist.

Colours ranged from black, khaki and grey to cream and white, while shoulders were kept strong and a glittering array of shorts were on offer. Jackets fell to just below the waist and boots stretched to the knee, with strong knits perfect for the cooler season.

Olivier thought long and hard about the message he wanted to convey this time around.

“For the inspiration, I wanted to work on the notion of futurism, it’s something I never did before,” he told style.com. “I was wondering what voice I wanted to have with the idea of futurism. I really wanted it to feel real, like it could really happen, not utopic. I wanted it to feel positive, and warm, a lot of comfort and warmth. A lot of easy shapes, a larger silhouette with some sportwear references. But then, you have the classics that are forever going to be there in your wardrobe like some tailoring, [which] bring a twist to it.”

The designer was careful not to make the pieces look too outlandish, as he wanted to emphasise their wearability. While creating the collection, he continually imagined pieces women would feel comfortable falling asleep in.

He can’t pick a favourite piece from the line as he believes they all work so well together.

Olivier explained it’s not in his nature to follow fashion rules.

“I don’t really have one, I like to consider anything. There isn’t really one style rule, I think a collection needs to find consistency, so you can go in directions you can never expect and shake your rules,” he said.
