Airport retail is big business – leading Swiss travel retailer Dufry, for one, has predicted that the duty-free industry will grow to US$67 billion (S$89 billion) by 2020 from an estimated US$45.7 billion in 2016.
Providing the latest evidence of this trend is the opening of the Louis Vuitton duplex store at the departure transit hall of Changi Airport Terminal 3. Carrying a selection of products across all product lines, this is the brand’s first airport store in South Asia, and it certainly holds its own against its spectacular street-facing boutiques anywhere else.

Located within Changi Airport’s new glass sculpture-filled Crystal Garden, the store beckons shoppers with a digital entrance featuring a 6.5m tall LED screen. The store facade is double-layered, with a glass exterior and an inner sparkling mesh inspired by Louis Vuitton’s Monogram flower. Hanging from the ceiling is a life-size replica of a 1930s French plane – a nod to the brand’s 164-year-old travel heritage, as well as its latest home.
