At a tender age of 17, local designer Lai Chan created his very first evening dress from scratch for his sister's wedding.
It was something that he will always remember because he had the challenge of being as creative as he could be about the design, and yet he had to ensure that it was made in time for the joyous occasion. We're pretty sure he passed that test well.
Fast forward to today, Lai Chan, who has almost four decades of dressmaking experience now, has since established himself in the fashion industry for his elaborate couture gowns and cheongsams. His works are pretty much one-of-a-kind, so much so that dignitaries, celebrities and socialites are his regulars.
But with such an impressive client list of regulars, it was the times that he dressed his late mother that was most memorable for the 55-year-old designer.
Speaking fondly about her during our interview with him, Lai Chan revealed that his mother is "someone that (he) adores but she is no longer around." Reminiscing about the good times, Lai Chan told us, as his eyes turned red, that he would pamper his mother with clothes, bags and shoes, and dress her up for family events or festive seasons.
This week, Lai Chan will be opening Singapore Fashion Week on Thursday (Oct 26) with his Spring/Summer 2018 collection in partnership with Her World.
