When you think of Benjamin Barker, sharp tailored suits and shirts probably come to mind.
Yes, while it caters to the gentlemen, the brand is now making a foray into womenswear with their new Benjamin Barker Red Label.
So why do womenswear?
Founder Nelson Yap, 36, who started the label in 2009, told Her World that the move was prompted by a growing customer base amongst the ladies, who were buying Benjamin Barker’s men’s shirts and tailoring them to fit their frames.
The brand’s new line starts with classic pieces to build your wardrobe with - suits and blazers, coupled with shirts and shirt dresses - all made with the signature tailored detailing that the brand has become known for.
“Innately comfortable in her own skin, the approach to fashion by the Benjamin Barker woman is never about chasing trends but rather, her personal style is characterised by an acute appreciation for good design that balances form and function.” - Nelson Yap
Despite the brand’s expertise in creating quality suits and shirts for men, Nelson reveals that it was a challenge to get the proper fit and cut to complement the slender female silhouette. His main customers in Singapore, who are mainly Asian women, also have a smaller frame. To combat this issue, Benjamin Barker tests and tweaks their fit and proportions.
But beyond what the brand claims, what can we, shoppers, expect from the Red Label?
Made in Singapore, the Red Label uses light fabrics like cotton for their shirts and Japanese and Turkish wool blend for their blazers. The blazers are cut to follow the classic fit of sharp shoulder and lapels and a relaxed waist that provides comfort while upholding the feminine shape.
For ladies who are worried that blazers and suits might look too masculine, Nelson suggests styling and layering the outfit with accessories. “Soften it with a splash of colour, something floral or pair it with jeans and heels for a sporty, confident look,” says Nelson.
Here are the some looks you can expect from the label.
Benjamin Barker Red Label is available at the Benjamin Barker store in Cathay Cineleisure Orchard and at the B Store in The Cathay.
