Every year, the stars make a splash on the red carpet at this particular event – the annual Costume Institute Gala held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
This year, the stakes seem to have gone up even more. With their fashion cred hanging on the line, just about everyone from Beyonce to Chelsea Clinton to Rihanna showed up.
And just because the name of the event bears the word “costume”, most celebrities seem to have taken this literally, showing up in costume-like gowns, to the horror of the fashion police.
Well, enough said, let’s take a look at who made our list of Best and Worst Dressed.
Sound off and let us know if you agree with us!
Styled by Rachel Zoe, in a Rachel Zoe creation, Kurkova was definitely the belle of the ball. The supermodel was resplendent in a sparkly gold number (with matching turban headpiece) that hugged her curves and fitted her to a T.
The younger (and lesser known) Knowles sister has been making waves with her risky yet bold fashion choices and this time it definitely paid off. She appeared in a bright yellow strapless Rachel Roy gown alongside the designer and shine like a sun, she did. The striking hue drew attention to the DJ, and for all the right reasons.
No one can quite “Carey” a dress off like Miss Mulligan. Her Prada fishscale sequinned halterneck dress was interesting to say the least. It started out covered in large gold circular sequins at the top and cascaded into silver at the base. Coupled with her coiffed golden locks, she was a picture of perfection.
In her deco-inspired metallic Ralph Lauren gown, Belle looked every bit like the ‘20s siren who just stepped off the set of Boardwalk Empire. Her plum lip colour and sleek side-parted chignon completed the pitch perfect glamorous look.
Stam’s pale blue John Galliano for Christian Dior Haute Couture dress stood out for its intricate detailing and structural quality. We love how she gave it edge by pairing her ultra feminine gown with chunky cuffs and jewellery. A nice touch.
Hello Bianca, Cleopatra called and would like her robes back. The last we checked, we are still in the month of May, so Halloween is still eons away. Our sweet Bianca, you may be of Italian noble birth, and you’re uber stylish most of the time but this is just unfortunate. Remember, all that glitters may not be gold.
We’re pretty sure poor George Clooney had an brain aneurysm when he saw his Descendent walk down the red carpet, and fireworks exploded in his mind. ‘Cause, that’s just exactly what happened to her dress.
Sex and the City? More like Sex and the Auntie. We’re not sure why Parker went with this lampshade of a dress (even though it’s Valentino couture), but we think she may have been inspired by her curtains.
My dear usually-cool Sevigny, we like your tousled locks, your new tan and the fact that you even bothered to slap on some makeup, but did you have to take the go-green movement so far? Need we remind you that recycled CDs do not a dress make.
Remember Lumiere the candelabra in Beauty and the Beast? Well, we found his girlfriend, the Featherduster at the Met Ball! The embroidered Givenchy Haute Couture gown with purple ombre feathered train left nothing to the imagination and regrettably so. Now, maybe someone should take a leaf out of her sister’s style guide.
The queen of quirk and fashion forward statements, it’s no surprise that Chung turned up in a Marc Jacobs black panel leather dress over a white shirt. We appreciate the fact that she always bucks convention and when everyone zigs in a fishtail gown, she zags with a trendy statement like this.
This Pan Am star sure knows how to make a splash on the red carpet. Despite her petite frame, Ricci stands out with this Thakoon gown. It’s guipure, it reveals a hint of the midriff (oh so on trend), it’s dramatic in the back with a huge bow – paired with Ricci’s attitude, it’s a home run.
