Although the shapes are almost traditional – pinafores, A-line skirts, nipped-waist jackets and skirt suits – the intricate embellishment of prints, embroidery and intricate intarsia motifs makes the Marni Spring Summer 2012 collection a delight.

Sharp lines are softened with organza underskirts or lace, soft jacquard knits and a riot of colour – aqua, pink, yellow are interspersed with flashes of white, brown and rust.

The three-dimensional nature of the embroidery, created by combining plastic and sequins, raffia and crystals or flowers and geometric elements, also makes the silhouette less defined.

As usual, there remains a playful feel to Marni’s SS2012 collection, each garment having a quirky-cool twist that makes it stand out from the crowd of ladylike trends seen on the catwalks for the last few seasons.

And once again, Marni’s accessories are absolutely lust-worthy, particularly the shoes – ankle-strap pumps with gilded python stack heels, sandals with streamlined wooden heels, contrast heel pumps or pumps with brogue motifs on the toe and heel.

Sharp lines return for the bags but they’re softened with more tactile additions like braided leather, silk cords and bugle beads.

Marni’s Spring Summer 2012 continues the geek chic aesthetic we’ve come to know – and love.

Marni boutiques are located at Hilton Shopping Arcade and Paragon Shopping Centre. Marni Spring Summer 2012 should be in stores by March, 2012.
