Mah, a fashion label specialising in scarves, launches in Singapore

New fashion label Mah – Mad About Hue – from Singapore-based designer Ondina Montgomery combines art and science to create colourful printed scarves

Mah – Mad About Hue – is a new Singapore-based fashion label by designer Ondina Montgomery that focuses on creating scarves in colourful prints based on combining art and science.

The 2013 range entitled The Quaintrelle Collection is based on images from crystal artworks by Academy and Emmy award-winning wildlife cinematographer Dr. Jim Frazier explains Ondina.

Using particular techniques, Dr Frazier’s works make large crystal formations that can be manipulated to create all sorts of weird and wonderful images; a glass plate is used as a canvas and the crystals become the paint.

Ondina then uses these images as the basis for the prints that are transferred onto various high quality materials in either digital, screen-print or woven form; Mah also works closely with regional rural communities to utilise their traditional weaving and natural dyeing techniques. The scarves are almost entirely handmade; each one is hand-finshed.

“For me, the scarves reflects a constant dialogue between the artist's work and the materials I involve which becomes the canvas telling a story that takes you on an amazing journey,” says Ondina. “I'm always aware of the details in my surroundings and I spend time each day searching for beautiful and unusual things that later I use as inspiration in my projects. I believe it is the little things in life that people remember”.

The limited edition Mah scarves have already been showcased at various art exhibitions and the brand is using Gemma Conroy, an Australian model and science journalist based out of Sydney, for its campaign images.

For a truely unique accessory, Mah’s The Quaintrelle Collection scarves are well-worth a look.
