What: Hugo Boss Autumn Winter 2014-15

Where: 250 West 55th Street. The runway mimicked Hugo Boss’ German headquarters where greenery surrounds modernist buildings. Mirrored structures were placed side by side with forest features.

The looks: For his first womenswear collection for Hugo Boss, newly minted artistic director Jason Wu paid homage to the brand’s rich heritage in tailoring. Through precise tailoring, the designer managed to transform the fashion label’s popular menswear fabrics into sleek silhouettes for the grown up tomboy ‒ a different aesthetic from his romantic and feminine eponymous brand.

The muted colour palette of black, camel, pink and white, suited the minimalistic looks. All attention was on the tailored pieces – from suits and coats to midi dresses – that were all nipped in at the waist with D-ring belts. What stole the show for us was the outerwear, from the smart coats flipped at the ends to reveal the inner contrast lining, the “layered” suit jacket and most of all, the cape-scarf hybrid that was flung carelessly across the models’ necks.

Wu didn’t take the menswear approach too far. There were dresses and tops with sheer panels and even the Bauhaus-inspired grid pattern had sheer elements. The last looks, save for closing model Stella Tennant’s stunning suit, were girly with sequins and chiffon overlays that moved more fluidly.

All in all, a rather safe collection from the designer but we can picture these wearable pieces on the celebrities that attended the show. Perhaps Wu could flex his imagination for the next Spring Summer collection for Hugo Boss? We will be waiting.

The accessories: For a yin-yang balance, Wu paired the dresses with flat tuxedo loafers and pants with lace-up strappy heels. The top handle structured doctor bags added a practical touch.
