Illusion & pop art inspire Raoul SS15 collection

NEW YORK - In an intimate setting within a building beside the Bryant Park, Singapore-based international label Raoul held its Spring Summer 2015 presentation at New York Fashion Week. The inspiration for the collection was at first derived from surrealism but as the creative direction progressed, it was illusion, pop art and its populist nature that came through in the pieces.

The idea of illusion came in a form of clothes giving an impression of not being exactly as they seem. For instance, a dress once unzipped can be transformed into a separate top; there was also a dress with polka dot prints of varying sizes that beguiled one’s vision.

Interesting pieces from the collection included a two-tone jacket with face print outline; and pieces with the traces of shapes and lines. There were also a variety of colours; contrasting bright hues for a loud statement or monotone for a quieter impression. The silhouettes were relaxed and simple for most items. There were also distinctive shapes in the form of a black and white zipped jacket, and white belted cardigan.

Overall, Raoul offered a bit of everything – you will be able to pick a piece for any occasion or function – and there was also a sense of maturing refinement in the overall design direction.

The more obvious borrowings from the 60s and 70s that were prevalent in previous collections have been subsumed into a more streamlined, sporty concept that’s less dependent on previous eras and therefore much more palatable for modern shoppers.

Raoul will continue its Spring Summer 2015 presentation in Milan on September 17-20, 2014, and in Paris on September 28-October 1, 2014.
