It seems like all women have a little bit of a love affair with black clothes. There’s just something about this non-colour that makes the wearer feel sharp, chic and fierce in an instant.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, it’s also received the stamp of approval from the coolest people in the fashion industry. Renowned designers like Rei Kawakubo, Ann Demeulemeester and Gareth Pugh are famously enamoured with the tone. The Olsen twins— Mary-Kate and Ashley—do all-black all the time.
Even the legendary Christian Dior once said, “You can wear black at any time. You can wear it at any age. You may wear it for almost any occasion.”
I cannot agree more. Whilst it might be the most empowering and flattering colour to wear, it actually requires a degree of creativity to make a limited palette look fresh and punchy.
An all-black outfit runs the risk of looking boring and bland! Here are six smart (and easy) styling tips to make those layers and layers of noir a true standout.
1. Go sheer
Sheer pieces in a translucent material like chiffon are a great way to lighten up your all-black outfits because they exude a delicate air, which tends to soften up the otherwise severe hue.
2. Statement accessory
A black outfit is the perfect blank canvas for dramatic jewellery. Thick choker necklaces are all the rage now. This accessory is easy to wear, doesn’t overwhelm your outfit, and will grant you plenty of style points.
3. A strong shoe game
We’ve always preached about how shoes can make or break your outfit. In this instance, a pair of statement shoes, perhaps in a punchy hue to provide a pop of colour, will take your all black outfit from zero to hero.
4. Show some skin
Piling on layers of the dark hue might make you look drab. Break the monotony with a midriff baring top or a deep V-neck blouse to subtly show some skin. This will help each individual piece to stand out and not blend together into an indistinguishable (and boring!) whole.
5. Add dimension
The easiest way to wear black without blending into the background is to choose apparel with interesting shapes or proportions: Think peplum details, exaggerated sleeves or even ruffles.
6. Mix your materials
Due to the lack of colour, textures play a very important role in an all-black outfit. Mix and match contrasting fabrics to amp up your look. Leather can add an edge to your outfits, while mesh detailing alludes to the athleisure trend and sequins, a glamorous touch.
