To really ace a smart-casual office dress code, remember to veer more on the ‘smart’ side, unless you’re working in a tech start-up, and even if you are, a t-shirt and jeans doesn’t really cut it if you want empowering work wear. You need to invest in smart separates and play with proportions so you feel both comfortable and put-together, no pencil skirt in sight.

The trousers

Wearing suit-style trousers without the jacket is an instant way to nail laidback luxe. We love this pair by always on point Miss Issa.

The shirt

The key to nailing smart-casual chic is to find brands that work for your budget who embrace the aesthetic. Equipment is a go-to brand for many a fashion editor, or steal your man’s and tie it or three-quarter tuck it for an oversized chic and free option, you didn’t hear that from us…

The jeans

Jeans or trouser leggings can be the perfect antidote to a tailored blazer or super chic heels, they bring out the ‘casual’ side of the look. Denim is one of the most booming aspects of the fashion industry at the moment, so your array of options is countless. If you’re not quite sure of how to find the perfect pair of jeans, see our guide here. Personally, I only ever wear my inherited vintage Calvin Kleins, the cut and natural distressed look is hard to mimic!

The tuxedo blazer

This is the perfect office and after hours cover-up for instant glam. I’m obsessed with tuxedo specialist Racil’s creations.

Head to Zara or Banana Republic for some more budget-friendly options.

Add a quirky accessory

To make your outfit individual and not just another run-of-the-mill look, add personality with skinny scarves, colourful silk ones tied round your bag or just a statement belt to cinch in that waist.

I’m obsessed with YVY’s leather creations at the moment, yes, Kylie Jenner recently rocked their fringed belt creation and looked super cool.
