Hedi Slimane is planning to return to fashion, but only when he has the “right tool”.

The French fashion designer was creative designer of menswear at Christian Dior from 2000 until 2007 and is one of the names said to be in the running to take over from shamed designer John Galliano at the label. He is the man behind the skinny jeans trend which is still dominant today.

Hedi has made a name for himself as a photographer in recent years, shooting for some of the biggest fashion magazines around. He does plan to return to his roots though, sparking speculation he may want to return to Dior.

“Yes, of course I am, but I’m really down to earth with fashion, and I have a business and brand-oriented mind,” he replied, when asked if he’s planning to return to fashion. “I know what it takes to make a brand strong in the long term in a global economy. Besides design and communication, I need to make sure I have the right tools to make a new design project successful in the long run.”

Heidi has strong views when it comes to what he wants to do with his design talents. He doesn’t understand why some people in his position team up with lower-priced stores to create cheaper lines, explaining it’s not an idea he would ever entertain.

“No, never. I could do my own jeans line, for instance, because I have legitimacy in launching the skinny jeans in fashion, and jeans for me feel like a real noble item in fashion, a social territory almost,” he told prestigehongkong.com. “On the other hand, I don’t like the collusion between high fashion design and high street. You have to know where you stand. I belong to luxury fashion. That’s what I’ve always felt and embraced. I like the best quality, the best fabrics and the most creative field in fashion. I will stay consistent. I belong to this world.” © Cover Media
