Who can deliver the most shock-worthy headpiece of the season? That must have been the question on the minds of designers as they masterfully planned their collections.
Having once again stepped up their game to creating the most outre, ostentatious headgear we’ve seen, these are the top dogs of the industry that have wowed us with their choice of eccentric accessories
When it comes to headwear for Fall 2019, it was clear to see that “shock factor” was an area of serious consideration for designers.
Funky, wacky toppers tried to outdo one another, with designers encouraging headgears to do more than just sit idly by as an often disregarded accessory.
From exaggerated bucket hats with outlandish proportions at brands like Valentino and Nina Ricci to bejewelled swimming caps at Saint Laurent, it’s clear to see that the headgears of the season are statement pieces of their own right that deserve to be styled AROUND, not simply thrown on to top off an outfit as a mere afterthought.

Resembling bell jars, the streetwear-favourite bucket hat receives the designer treatment for Fall 2019 while arriving with extra tall crowns.
Valentino’s Puritan-style cloche, which frankly conjured up dystopian vibes courtesy of The Handmaid’s Tale for us, were sent down the runway is solid colours such as white, black and beige.
But the true standout piece was the one worn by Kaia Gerber, a cloche crafted from detailed white lace.

Tight swim caps that clung to the head of models almost unforgivingly have emerged from the pool and and set their sights on making a splash on fashion month’s biggest runways. Is it an uncanny emerging trend?
Definitely. But to reduce it to a silly, unwearable fad doesn’t give it enough credit. Simply consider Saint Laurent’s stylish bejewelled number that’s woven together to form a fishnet.
Embedded with chunky sparkling crystals, it’s elegant and ladylike enough to be worn with an evening dress.

Loewe’s animal ear caps were the talk of the town during the F/W ‘19 presentations. It’s easy to see why; termed the “Wings Hat”, it features elongated ear flaps that, instead of falling down like trapper hats, are perked upwards to resemble wings.
It also has an extra panel in the middle pointing upwards, made to mimic an animal’s tail. Is it just us, or does this remind you of the adorable flying elephant Dumbo from that Disney movie?
Seen in black, yellow and candy pink, the “Wings Hat” is now available on the Loewe site for 850£ (S$1,487.32).

Never failing to shock us with their tastefully bizarre designs, Gucci sent a couple of fully protective helmets down their runway.
Crafted from fire engine red or houndstooth patterned textile, the helmets featured tinted visors that almost cover the entire face.
True to the survivalist streak adopted by many designers recently, this protective headgear flirts with the idea of turning helmets into a fashion statement.

We seem to be suffering from fluffy frenzy this fall, as plenty of shearling or soft fuzzy tactiles are rapidly gaining favour amongst the fashion crowd.
No longer just seen on bags, boots and coats, warm cozy textiles are now taking over hats too.
Seen at Tom Ford as fuzzy fedoras in a variety of colours to match their monochromatic suits and at Fendi as a fluffy white trapper hat that looks just as soft as a bed of snow, a cozy touch is almost requisite for everything we don this season.

There were also plenty of fishnet veils adorning berets and bucket hats this season, floating pristinely over the faces of models as they made their way down the runway.
Bringing to mind some of the stunning fascinators we saw at the Royal Weddings, these hats offer an air of class and sophistication in an understated way.
Dior had a series of patterned and solid coloured bucket hats, but our favourite was this leopard print number with a short panel of fishnet veil secured loosely at the brim.

Yes, there’s nothing new about a baseball hat. But have you ever seen a baseball hat suspended above a head?
JW Anderson is about to change that, with its leather baseball caps that are designed to rest above the top of your head, instead of on it.
Secured with straps that tie around the head, these floating caps also resemble the brand’s playful “Cap Bags” – crossbody bags with a cap-like silhouette that also debuted during the brand’s F/W ‘19 show.

Riding the Elizabethan wave to bring us a crop of fresh, zany hat designs, Marc Jacobs brought us back to the days of Shakespeare where scholars and poets donned caps with a single feather propped up from it.
Marc Jacobs’s take on the feathered cap, however, was remarkably more modernised and streetwear-friendly.
Showcasing a slew of knitted beanies accented with feathers emerging from the top, the designer once again did not disappoint when it comes to setting trends we would all come to love.

This particular number, which features bright red roses at the side and a crystal chandelier structure combined with candles, offers a romantic dinner table setting – all on top of a person’s head.
