Worlds away from the kitschy Bambi statement prints of this season, Ricardo Tisci looks to a more subdued, dare we say, “mature”, aesthetic with the tribal inspiration of his collection for Givenchy Spring Summer 2014.

Tisci calls the collection “a crash between African and Japanese cultures”; his metaphor made quite literal by a showy pile-up of vintage cars set up on the runway and the use of “tribal” drummers playing live for his soundscape.

He clad Givenchy men in vivid, striped tribal prints for Spring Summer 2014, but Tisci’s womenswear collection took subtler visual cues from how the Masai women of Kenya drape their clothes. Tisci’s attention to draping was then integrated elegantly with distinctly Japanese-inspired silhouettes and kimono-style sleeves.

Earthy hues pervade this Givenchy Spring Summer collection, with the fabrication of some pieces ‒ layered in shades reminiscent of sedimentary rock ‒ an obvious reference to geology.

For fancier soirees, the Givenchy woman can choose from the show’s finale dresses; these gowns glisten with glittery paillettes, each of which are embroidered onto strips of silk georgette and leather.

It’s easy to picture these being a hot favourite on the red carpet and among celeb fans like Kim Kardashian ‒ who was seen in the show’s front row; perhaps picking out her new post-baby bump wardrobe?

In contrast to those glittery numbers and the Swarovski-encrusted “makeup masks”, towering stiletto heels were conspicuously missing as flat sandals reigned this season on the Givenchy runway. Even the evening gowns were paired with these shoes, which featured oversized leather buckles and thick plexi straps made for easy walking.

Last season’s Givenchy girl may adore the sporty statement sweaters and punky leather jackets. But for Spring Summer 2014, it looks like she’s ready to skip the streetwear and slip into more body-conscious jersey dresses, kudos to Tisci’s beautiful draping.
