Before taking creative reins at G2000, Melinda Wong was Giordano’s group creative director for 10 years, during which she revamped Giordano Ladies and Giordano Junior.

Who is the new G2000 woman? According to the brand’s new product director, Hong Konger Melinda Wong, she is probably most of us: constantly on the go, a white-collar worker who likes her work wear stylish but not excessive, and equal parts comfortable and well made.

Wong joined the brand in late 2016 to give G2000 woman a fresher perspective; the brand’s last refresher was in 2010. With her debut – the S/S’18 collection – she tells us why the brand for work wear isn’t office lady centric anymore, and is a label to pay attention to in 2018.

A lightweight trench coat works well as a jacket.

Its new sensibility is Scandi

Known as a tastemaker of Scandinavian design in Hong Kong, Wong also has her own eight-year-old HK-based multi-label store, Vein, which curates Nordic designer wear. She has brought that same eye and taste to G2000 Woman.

“One of my favourite sources of inspiration for style and design has always been the Scandinavian style. This translates to jackets and separates with clean lines, minimal but purposeful details, and good-quality finishing.

“We pay attention to details, but we don’t go overboard with them. For example, we shifted some shirt cuffs higher, used fabric-wrapped buttons, added a fine lace insert to a skirt for a more interesting hemline, and lined the back of a blazer with a pleated, semi-sheer material for lightness and breathability.”

The Prince of Wales check looks less old-school on a bit of athleisure.

It’s now work wear that makes dressing for work easier

“We want to provide a solution-based wardrobe of elegantly tailored blazers and dresses, feminine blouses and tops, and distinctively cut everyday pants and skirts. I call them solution-based because they are made to address the needs of our customers, who often have fast-paced lifestyles. This means each style has been carefully designed to coordinate easily with other G2000 designs or work wear from other brands, and is versatile enough for more than one occasion.

“One of our signatures is a blouse which can be worn three ways, and is great for travel. Our contemporary blazers and chic jackets would go just as well with jeans and leggings as they would with tailored bottoms. We have feminine blouses that work from Monday to Sunday, morning to evening too.”

It’s still the same easy-to-care-for make, but is even more comfortable

“What is essential in the revamped G2000 Woman is the hand-feel. We choose materials that not only look good but also feel cool, dry and comfortable on the skin.

“We mostly use cotton-based or polyester-blend materials – cotton for its comfort, and polyester for its easy wear and care; finer materials will also be used in a few styles every season. Most of our tops and some of our suits are machine-washable and can be easily steam-ironed at home.”

G2000’s S/S’18 collection is priced at $33-$169.
