Italian luxury fashion house Fendi will celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2015 and is already gearing up for some special celebrations. It has been announced that Fendi will pay for restoration work on some of Rome’s cultural icons, with the company enabling the Trevi Fountain to be returned to its former glory.

The City of Rome has already carried out an emergency intervention on the fountain in 2012 which cost €320,000 (about $532,000), so it’s assumed that the full restoration costs will be much higher.
“We are proud of being tied to the city, but I believe not everyone knows, and this is a great occasion to do something for the city that hosts us,” chief executive Pietro Beccari told WWD. “Rome is a home of Made in Italy. There’s an incredible savoir faire, but as well it’s a source of inspiration for many.”
The Trevi Fountain is one of the most famous of its kind in the world and the biggest baroque version in the city, standing at 86 feet tall and 161 feet wide. Work on it was completed in 1762 and it’s estimated that €3,000 a day are thrown into it by tourists. The legend states that those who place money into the water will come back to Rome at some point in the future.
Artistic director of the label Karl Lagerfeld was at a press conference to discuss the plans, along with head of accessories Silvia Fendi, Beccari and the mayor of the city; it’s thought that Lagerfeld will also create an accompanying art book of photographs as well. It’s also being mooted that Fendi will stage a runway show at the fountain once work on it is completed.
The Fendi for Fountains arrangement will last over four years and see several similar landmarks also worked on. The Trevi Fountain restoration will take approximately 20 months from the commencement of restoration works and is scheduled to end by 2015 around the same time as the company’s 90th birthday celebrations.
