The turn out for the first major Chanel event in Singapore – in this case the first public viewing of Karl Lagerfeld’s fashion film “Once Upon A Time … Deauville 1913” at Raffles Hotel – saw not only the Kaiser himself (and his many minions) but also a who’s who list of “fashion royalty” descend on the venerable hotel.
Spotted in the crowd milling around Raffles Hotel garden were gaggles of models including stars like Saskia de Brauw (pictured below left), Stella Tennant, Cara Delevingne (pictured below centre) and Sara Blomqvist, alongside top fashion editors, actors including Chinese actress Zhou Xun and two of the French stars of the film, Anna Mouglalis and Clotilde Hesme, and various other important fashion people.
While it was a bit hard to see who was who in the mostly dim hotel garden – a picturesque but steamy choice for an event in the middle of Singapore’s summer – the casual vibe saw all sorts rubbing shoulders with many a whispered “Is that … (insert famous name here)” being voiced.
As the fashionable crowd sipped champagne and nibbled on satay sticks awaiting the appearance of the Kaiser it was fun counting the number of Chanel bags on show; overheard was one comment stating: “I’ve never seen so many Chanel bags in one spot in Singapore!”
Once the film finally began, Karl Lagerfeld (pictured below; image courtesy Bagaholicboy) suddenly appeared in the centre of the garden, swathed in his customary high-necked shirt, gloves and blazer – obviously he wasn’t affected by the heat!
On the big outdoor screen the same posse of models performed as themselves in an opening short before the black and white movie featuring actress Keira Knightley began; watched in almost complete silence (pictured below).
Other notable names on show in the short film include French actress Clotilde Hesme, models Stella Tennant, Lindsey Wixson, Jamie Bochert and Caroline de Maigret, as well as Lagerfeld’s muse, Lady Amanda Harlech, her daughter Tallulah and male face of Chanel Baptiste Giabiconi.
Once the film ended – after charting the rise of Mademoiselle Chanel from hat shop owner to the beginning of her fashion empire – everyone whipped around to clap, call out “bravo” and to take a quick snap of the man of the hour.
Chanel topped off its very civilised event with the amazingly gracious act of pre-booking cars for the guests! French courtesy at its best.
I can’t wait for the Cruise 2013-14 show tomorrow; stay tuned for more updates!
Please forgive the quality of the images; I’m really going to have to invest in a smartphone with better photo-taking technology. And immense thanks to the fabulous Bagaholicboy who provided the best photo of the evening!
