It’s the start of the award season again; and all eyes are on the red carpet stars.
Besides the usual parade of mermaid tail gowns, this year’s Emmy Awards saw plenty of bright shades — Heidi Klum, Julie Bowen, Claire Danes, Ginnifer Goodwin, Julianne Moore were among the many stars who stepped out in colour.
But who wore it better? Whose fashion risk paid off, and which stars actually look worse for wear?
Here, we pick 10 of the best and worst dressed stars seen at the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Jessica Pare

OLD HOLLYWOOD: Jessica Pare in Jason Wu
Sometimes, you don’t need to try too hard to look picture-perfect. Mad Men actress Jessica Pare channels old Hollywood charm effortlessly in this white toga gown by Jason Wu. She’s got every detail right — a hot red pout, her vintage updo, the classic emerald ring and dangling earrings.
Christina Hendricks

OLD HOLLYWOOD: Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano
She’s got an hourglass figure for sure. But there’s no need for the voluptuous Hendricks to fit into a gown that exaggerates her curves; especially not one that looks a tad too tight. This silver gown also looks too similar to another infamous Christian Siriano creation that Hendricks had worn to the Golden Globes in 2010.
Ginnifer Goodwin

FLORALS: Ginnifer Goodwin in Monique Lhuillier
With her pixie crop and a couture gown in tangerine, Ginnifer Goodwin’s unafraid to stand out; and in a way that fashionistas would approve too. The orange hue gives the Monique Lhuillier gown its “wow” factor while the floral vines carry that fairytale quality that’s happily in sync with Goodwin’s role in Once Upon A Time.
Elisabeth Moss

FLORALS: Elisabeth Moss in Dolce & Gabanna
What works on the runway doesn’t always translate well on the red carpet; and this seems all too clear on Elisabeth Moss. The Mad Men actress wore a Dolce & Gabanna dress with too many details; it’s got a gathered bodice, a ruffled sweetheart neckline and a busy floral print. While we like the star’s new blonde crop, we hope she’ll take better fashion tips (a new stylist perhaps?) for her new wardrobe too.
Leslie Mann

BRIGHTS: Leslie Mann in Naeem Khan
Yellow isn’t an easy shade to pull off but actress Leslie Mann does it with aplomb in this cheery Naeem Khan gown. The updo and the simple makeup keeps her looking fresh and radiant. Plus, we love the accessories; her turquoise drop earrings and bracelet are a cool contrast against the marigold skirt.
Julianne Moore

BRIGHTS: Julianne Moore in Christian Dior
It’s so vibrant that it hurts our eyes. While she’s taken a bold choice with the colour, this Christian Dior dress has Julianne Moore so covered up from head to toe that it looks more matronly than fashion-forward.
January Jones

THAT BLACK DRESS: January Jones in Zac Posen
A black gown doesn’t have to be boring. Here, Mad Men actress January Jones ups the drama quotient with a multi-textured showstopper from Zac Posen. There’s no unnecessary sparkle involved; Jones keeps it simple with a black Cartier clutch and peep toes from Louboutin. The same goes for her hair and makeup; her auburn locks are slicked back while her blue smokey eyes draw inspiration from the sheer, peek-a-boo layers on her gown.
Lena Headey

THAT BLACK DRESS: Lena Headey in Giorgio Armani
You would think that it’s impossible to go wrong with black but in Lena Headey’s case, it can happen. It’s a gothic look that is nowhere as stylish as Jones’ couture gown; with that cape flowing past her shoulders, the Game of Thrones star looks as witch-like as she could be in Giorgio Armani.
Nicole Kidman

GLITTER GLAM: Nicole Kidman in Antonio Berardi
Nicole Kidman shines in Antonio Berardi; she’s easily one style step up the rest on the oceanic inspiration at the 2012 Emmy Awards. Looking ever more statuesque in this column gown, the shimmering beads were a more refreshing take on mermaid-esque red carpet fashion.
Hayden Panettiere

GLITTER GLAM: Hayden Panettiere in Marchesa
We have no clue why Hayden Panettiere would ever decide to wrap mismatching blue tulle over gold embellishments. It’s a look that’s straight from the runway and we’re not sure if that paid off. While she did take a fashion risk with this Marchesa gown, we think it plays too much to the over-exoticised Indian fashion inspiration that floats down runways every now and then.
